A YOUNG man was found hanging just yards from a Wearside residential street.

Around 7am on Saturday, police received a report of a body having been found near the roundabout close to the Venerable Bede School and Eltham Road in Ryhope.

Police cordoned off the small area of trees, just metres away from homes in Fylingdale Drive, and remained there for about four hours before an undertaker’s van came to remove the body.

Although the identity of the deceased has not been released, it was believed to be a young man who was not from the Sunderland area, but was visiting friends in the city and his death is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police, said: “Officers attended the scene along with the ambulance service where a man was pronounced dead.

“There is not believed to be any third party involvement and a report is being prepared for the coroner.”

One stunned resident living nearby, who did not wish to be named, said: “It is quite a shock. The first we knew was when we got up and saw all the police there.”

Another added: “It is dreadful, just tragic.”
