A FISHERMAN was left drifting after his boat broke down on the River Wear tonight.
The 32ft coble had to be towed to safety, from close to the Stadium of Light in Sunderland.
Sunderland RNLI launched the Atlantic 85 lifeboat after the men rang a family member and asked them to alert the Coastguard.
He was rescued by lifeboat volunteers following the call out at 6.30pm, but Sunderland RNLI’s senior helmsman Paul Nicholson had a warning for anyone going out on the water.
He said: “We always tell people to carry a means of communication and to contact the Coastguard directly.”
