Sunderland is flying the flag for clean beaches.
Keep Britain Tidy has handed both Roker and Seaburn beaches Blue Flag and Quality Coast Awards.
The international scheme is run every year and acts as a guarantee to tourists and visitors that the beach they are visiting is of a high standard.
It is awarded for high standards of water, facilities, safety and the environment.
Now, Sunderland City Council staff have raised the flags at the popular spots.
Councillor John Kelly, portfolio holder for safer city and culture, said: “All our many thousands of visitors can now once again see these Blue Flags flying above the Roker and Seaburn beaches.
“These internationally-recognised awards reflect the hard work of council staff who ensure our beaches and promenades are clean and safe for the public, and the visitors who enjoy and respect these beaches.
“There is criteria in these awards for clean water, which we’ve also met, so good news all round.
“These flags are about how our seafront is being responsibly managed and enjoyed by the public.
“I should also add one more thanks for the council staff who helped make sure we got the flags flying in some very breezy conditions.”
