BREATH-TAKING aerial acrobatics and cutting-edge displays will be on the cards as the Sunderland International Airshow returns for the 26th time.
And this year, organisers hope to attract even more families with little ones to the action-packed event, headlined by acrobatic display team The Blades.
Taking place on the weekend of July 25 to 27, the three-day spectacular is again organised by Sunderland City Council’s events management company Sunderland Live.
The council’s portfolio holder for public health, wellness and culture, Coun John Kelly said: “When planning the Sunderland International Airshow we never rest on our laurels.
“We are proud to keep it as the largest free family event in the North East, if not the country, and this year we will have a packed flying programme on each of the three days.
“I’m really pleased to welcome back to Sunderland The Blades, a leading display team of former Red Arrow pilots.
“They will be displaying for us on both Saturday and Sunday with their routines which are renowned for being cutting-edge.”
Now in their ninth display season with a fresh new look and breath-taking aerobatics, The Blades’ display lasts for 15 minutes and includes more than 30 exhilarating manoeuvres, with a variety of mind-blowing aerobatic stunts flown just feet apart.
The Blades team leader, Mark ‘Cutty’ Cutmore, said: “We’re really looking forward to returning to Sunderland.
“It’s a fantastic display site and the fact that so many people from all over the North East come along makes it really special.
“We’re one of the very few display teams that’s allowed to arrive into a show over the heads of the crowd and it is a truly amazing sight as you fly in to see so many people lined up along the seafront.
