BIRTHDAY celebrations are under way after a group reached a historic landmark.

Hylton Women’s Institute marked its 90th anniversary with a party.

The group are the oldest WI in the Tyne and Wear Federation and still have a healthy list of members.

Hylton WI were formed in 1921, just six years after the Women’s Institute was created.

President of Hylton WI Christine Wilson said: “It’s been excellent.

“We’ve had a very enjoyable evening.”

Women in the group met at the Tansey Centre in South Hylton to celebrate their success.

“There’s been a lovely meal and some good entertainment too.”

The group are involved in a range of activities, from walks to coffee morning.

“We’re the oldest WI in our federation, so it’s really special to reach this age,” added Christine.

“We feel it’s a great achievement that we are still going strong.

“The institute has achieved new members each year.

“We feel quite happy about that.

“Other WIs have had to give up some of their posts, but at the minute we have 36 members.”
