A man remains in a life-threatening condition after a crash involving an off-road bike.

The rider was taken to the James Cook University Hospital after the collision, which happened in Woolwick Close in Witherwack, Sunderland, at about 6pm yesterday.

Northumbria Police, which is investigating the crash, has said he sustained what are believed to be life-threatening injuries.

He remains in a critical but stable condition.

A spokesman for the Great North Air Ambulance said that a male in his 20s was anaesthetised after sustaining serious head injuries in the smash.

The doctor-led trauma team treated and stabilised him before flying him to the Middlesbrough hospital.

Residents reported nine police cars and ambulances arriving at the scene in the aftermath of the collision.
