A BIKER remains in a critical condition after a smash on the A19.

The air ambulance had to be called out after a motorbike crashed into a car in the left-hand lane of the A19 southbound at North Hylton.

The 46-year-old man was taken to the RVI in Newcastle for treatment.

Nine police cars were at the accident, which caused long tailbacks of traffic, as the A19 was shut for several hours.

The smash happened at about 7pm last night.

Northumbria Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash.

Those with information are asked to call the non-emergency 101 number.
