A NIGHTCLUB has abandoned its bid to extend its opening times after police revealed a number of allegations about attacks at the venue.
Utopia, which runs Loveshack in Durham, has withdrawn its application to extend the hours of the Walkergate bar until 3.30am, seven days a week, with last orders at 3am.
The plans were opposed by the police – who revealed claims of rape and sex assaults committed inside the club – environmental health officers, politicians and residents.
Sergeant Tim Robson, of Durham Police’s alcohol reduction unit, said it had been alleged a woman had been raped in the club’s VIP area on July 2.
Just days earlier, on June 30, it was reported a woman had been sexually assaulted in the same area.
The application had been due to go before Durham County Council’s licensing committee on Wednesday, but the authority has confirmed it has since been withdrawn.
The company has declined to comment, but has previously said it had built up a good reputation for the bar because of its policies and procedures.
