COUNCIL bosses are demanding an urgent inquiry into a delay-hit major roadworks scheme hitting thousands of motorists.
Coun Iain Malcolm, leader of South Tyneside Council, has written to transport secretary Philip Hammond over major concerns about repairs to the Whitemare Pool roundabout.
Work started in February 2010 and was due to be completed in November, but now the scheme is not due to be finished until August.
Coun Malcolm said he intended getting the support of Sunderland Council leader Paul Watson in calling for a resolution to the situation.
A Highways Agency spokesman said: “We understand the importance of Whitemare Pool to the local community and regret any inconvenience caused by this essential work, and the delays that have been incurred.
“We are working with the contractor to minimise the impact of the work and complete it as soon as possible.”
