A BOWLER who brought back a national crown to Wearside is in the running for another honour.
A Best of Wearside award could be beckoning for David Bolt, from Silksworth, who hit the headlines when he became the first national bowls champion from the area in 100 years.
His impressive achievements go even further. He is also representing his country in both the indoor and outdoor game.
And he has recently qualified for the bowls world championships in Norfolk after winning all five of his qualifying games without dropping a single set.
Now, though, David is hoping for a title closer to home.
That’s because he has been nominated for the sporting achievement category in the Sunderland Echo Best of Wearside awards which are held in association with Gentoo.
When he was told he was in the running, proud David said: “That is fantastic. It is brilliant news.”
He admitted it was “all go” at the moment after returning to the England set-up and qualifying for the prestigious world competition.
“I have played the game for 26 years and gone to places all over the world including Australia and Cyprus. I managed to get through five qualifying rounds for the world championships without dropping a set.
“All being well, I am hoping to do well at the world events.
“And I am over the moon to have been nominated.”
It’s early days in our competition but we are on the lookout for lots of nominations for the Best of Wearside awards.
The competition will culminate in a grand finale at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday, November 19.
For now, though, we want readers to get in touch with their very own favourites as they could be the ones following in the footsteps of last year’s fantastic winners.
We want lots of entries to recognise excellence in our community. Put your nominations in before the closing date which is Friday, November 7.
