WEIRD and wonderful creatures invaded a Sunderland beach.
The sand sculptures at Roker were part of a series of family activities on Saturday.
But producing the fantastic pieces was not as hard work as it could have been.
Sculptor Chris Canning, from Penshaw, admitted the back-breaking work had been done in advance.
“There was a JCB on the beach first thing,” he said.
“He pushes all the sand into a big pile and then I just start moving the sand around to make what I want to make.
“It will probably take the best part of a day – five or six hours – to complete a piece.”
