Sunderland Arthritis Care Group had a lovely meal at The Barnes. The afternoon was enjoyed by all, and thanks to the staff at The Barnes, who were so kind and helpful. The next meeting of Sunderland Arthritis Care Group will be on Wednesday, October 5 from 6pm to 8pm, when the speaker will be Phil Curtis talking about the 1960s and 70s.

The ladies from Sunderland Townswomen’s Guild spent a lovely day at Abbotsford House and gardens, the home of Sir Walter Scott at Melrose, on the Scottish borders. They all agreed the views are stunning and well worth a visit.

The subject of Douglas Knox’s talk to fellow members of Bishopwearmouth and Sunderland Men’s Probus Cubs at their third joint meeting in Ashbrooke Sports Pavilion at 10.30am on Tuesday, October 11, will be Higgs Boson. Non members, for whom there is no admission charge, will be very welcome.

Sensei Rebecca Potts runs a karate clubs at St Nicholas Haver Hall, opposite the Toby Carvery, on Saturday morning, and St Mark’s Community Association on Sunday from 4.30pm to 6pm. Barnes, Pallion and Millfield Residents’ Association will meet in St Mary Magdalene’s Parish Centre, Wilson Street, on Tuesday, October 4, at 7pm.

The next meeting of The Sunderland Budgerigars’ Society will take place on Wednesday, October 5, in Deptford and Millfield Community Association, Hylton Road, at 7.30pm. Speaker will be Dean Harding. All budgerigar fanciers, including those who may wish to consider starting the hobby, are welcome. The meetings are very informal and after a brief business meeting the evening is handed over to the speaker. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served during the talk.

The Music Makers Choir are presenting a joint concert, with the Chester-le-Street Civic Choir at St John’s Church, Ashbrooke, on Saturday at 7pm. Tickets are £7, pay at the door.

As part of Macmillan’s World Biggest Coffee Morning, Burn Park Methodist Church is taking part in with a coffee morning on Friday from 10am to noon. There will be a cake stall, and sausage and bacon sandwiches. All are welcome.

Sunderland Cardiac Support Group will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, October 13, at 6.45pm in The Education Centre, Sunderland Royal Hospital. Speaker will be Phil Curtis will give an illustrated talk on All Things Sunderland.

Ewesley Road WI will celebrate its 18th birthday at its meeting on Wednesday, October 5 at 2.15pm in The Enid Dagg Room of the church. The stall will be the Shoe Box Appeal and the competition Guesstimate.

Bernard Hope will be guest speaker when Ewesley Road Ladies’ Fellowship meets tomorrow at 7.30pm.

‘Sing’ is a new singing group, plus associated music theatre skills, which will start on Wednesday, November 2, at Ewesley Road Methodist Church. Running from 5pm to 6.30pm, all ages are invited to sing and join discussion about it’s future. Activities initially will focus on school Years 3 to 6 but plans for young people of all ages are envisaged. Ring 07546584196 for more information.

Deptford and Millfield Community Centre Children’s Dance and Drama Group is presenting Dorothy’s Adventure on Saturday, October 15, at 3pm and 6.30pm. St Nic’s Tots are holding a Macmillan Coffee Afternoon during their session on Thursday from 1.30pm to 3pm. There will be arts and crafts, bouncy castle and much more. All are welcome. For more information, contact Jan on 07932478052.

Sunderland South Action Group of The Bible Society will hold a coffee morning tomorrow from 10.30am to noon in St George’s Church, Stockton Road. There will be a bring-and-buy stall, cake stall and raffle. Tickets £2 can be purchased at the door.

On Tuesday, November 15, at 7.15pm, Sunderland Floral Art Club will present ‘Tis The Season’, a flower demonstration by Pam Alexander, from Morpeth, in The Royalty Theatre. There will be an interval, during the evening when you can have a pre-ordered coffee or drinks at the bar. Tickets for this event are £7. Ring 5227832 or pay at the door.

Tea and bingo will be held at St Mary Magdalene’s Parish Centre, Wilson Street, on Saturday at 1.30pm, with a jackpot of £100 to play for. Everyone is welcome.

St Bede’s Church, Sorley Street, Millfield, is looking for new Brownies and Guides to meet at St Bede’s Church hall. Brownies meet Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm, and Guides meet Tuesdays from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

A memorial service will be held at St Gabriel’s Church on Sunday at 6.30pm. This is service is to primarily remember those people who have had a Funeral Service of Thanksgiving in the last six months. Led by St Gabriel’s Clergy team of Readers, names are read out and candles are lit. You can go along to remember anyone. The service is followed by light refreshments. All are welcome.

St Luke’s Church coffee morning takes place on Saturday at 10am in the JB Hall. There will be tea, coffee and scones, raffle cake stall and bric-a-brac stall.

Call into Sunderland Minster’s Vintage and Craft Fayre on Saturday from 10am to 3pm. Entry is 50p for adults, and children are free. There is an assortment of stall including handmade items, jewellery, bric-a-brac, handbags, cards and gift bags and much more. Refreshments are available.

On Saturday, October 8, a table-top sale will be held at St Mary Magdalene’s Parish Centre, Wilson Street. Doors open at 9am for sellers and the sale begins at 10am. Tables are £5. To book, ring 0191 565 6318.
