On Saturday two members of Sunderland Karate Academy in Lambton Street, Lucy Dixon and Elle Smith, were asked to be part of The Dokan Karate Association Team at this year’s English Karate Federations National Championships in Sheffield.

The team were extremely successful and the girls came third in Kata. Elle also got silver in Kumite. Instructor Derek Laing was celebrating too as he was promoted to EKF national referee. A great day for the club. Sunderland Karate Academy is offering a free beginners course in Shotokan Karate to anyone at Lambton Street Youth Centre on Mondays and Fridays from 6.30pm. Sunderland Floral Art Club had a chairman’s charity fundraising day for The Great North Air Ambulance. Up to now £270 has been raised. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

St Gabriel’s Church coffee morning will be held on Saturday, May 14, from 10.30am-noon and is in aid of St Gabriel’s Church. Coffee and scone is £1 and there will also be a cake stall and raffle.

Greyforce Computer Club meets in Pallion Action Group, Pallion, on Tuesdays from 12.30pm-3.30pm. The club offers free tuition on aspects of the computer, including Learn To Use The Internet, Maintain Your Computer and How to Use Emails.If you are interested just go along.

On Tuesday, May 17, at 2pm in The Royalty Theatre, Sunderland Floral Art Club will be visited by John Dalton, from Scaleby, near Carlisle, with his demonstration entitled What A Wonderful World.

The Sunderland and District Budgerigar Society will meet tomorow at 7.30pm at Deptford and Millfield Community Association, Havelock Towers, 288 Hylton Road. Because of cancellation through illness, there is no speaker booked but members are looking forward to sharing notes on the progress of their individual flocks. Meetings continue to be held on the first Wednesday of each month, starting at 7.30pm. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served during the meeting. Eden Vale Residents’ Association will take place at Richard Avenue Primary School on Tuesday, May 10, from 6.30pm-8pm. All are welcome to go along and discuss any matters concerning the community. Details of previous meetings can be found on their website edenvaleresidentsassociation.webs.com/

The Church of The Nazarene has lots of activities including: Sundays an evening service from 6pm-7.30pm; Mondays tea and toast from 10am-noon; Tuesdays, Ladies’ Night, knit and natter, from 7pm-9pm and Men’s Night with pool etc from 7pm-9pm; Wednesdays card craft from 10am-noon, followed at 7.30pm-9pm with Bible Study; Thursdays toddlers from 10am-noon. All are welcome.

St Mary Magdalene’s spring fair takes place in the parish centre, Wilson Street on Saturday from 11am onwards, followed at 1.30pm by tea and bingo where the jackpot stands at £100.

Deptford and Millfield Community Association has a bowling club on Mondays and Fridays from 1pm-3.15pm. Anyone interested in joining, just go along and ask for Moira.

Ewesley Road Methodist Church will be holding its annual jumble sale on Saturday at 1.30pm.

Sunderland Cardiac Support Group monthly meeting takes place on Thursday, May 12, at 6.45pm in The Education Centre, Sunderland Royal Hospital. It will be the AGM and election of trustees and officers.

Messy church will be held at St Gabriel’s Church on the second Wednesday of every month in the Underchurch at 3.30pm. This month it is on Wednesday, May 11.

The Vintage and Craft Fair at Sunderland Minster will be on Saturday from 10am-3pm. Refreshments are also available. Entry is 50p for adults and free for children.

St Gabriel’s Church gift day takes place on Sunday. Family service is at 10.30am.

Arthritis Care Sunderland will hold its monthly meeting in The Education Centre, Sunderland Royal Hospital, tomorrow from 6pm-8pm. Speakers will be Hannah Parrington and Rebecca Girvan, from The Stroke Organisation, and also Andy, from Welfare Rights.

Maureen Martin will give a talk on Saxon Churches to Ewesley Road Ladies ‘ Fellowship when they meet tomorow at 7.30pm.

A coffee morning will be held at St Luke’s Neighbourhood Centre, Pallion, on Saturday at 10am.

Ewesley Road WI meets in The Enid Dagg Room of the Church tomorrow at 2.15pm. Entertainment will be by Age UK Choir.

On Sunday, May 15, at 6.30pm St Gabriel’s Church is having its annual lifelong learning service, followed by light refreshments
