David Vaughan, of David Vaughan’s Dental Surgery, Merle Terrace, Pallion, celebrated his 60th birthday with an open day at the surgery. Lots of his patients turned up to give him their best wishes.

Sunderland South Bible Society will hold a coffee morning at St George’s Centre, Stockton Road on Wednesday, September 30, from 10.30am to noon. There will be an exciting variety of stalls, with a word of welcome by the Reverend Kathrine Bagnall, vicar at St Mary’s, Springwell. Tickets available at the door for £1.50, which includes coffee and biscuit. Go along and help raise funds for The Bible Society, which prints and distributes scriptures throughout the world.

Arthritis Care Sunderland Branch will meet in The Education Centre, Sunderland Royal Hospital on Wednesday, October 7, from 6pm to 8pm. Brenda Graham will be the guest speaker with a talk is entitled Kate Middleton’s Northern Roots. At this meeting members are being asked to make time for tea and take along a friend. Tea, coffee and cake will be available to help raise funds for the group. Dorothy will also be there with a display of her homemade cards. The group did not have a meeting last month but some members did meet up for a meal at the Barnes, which was also attended by Alan who celebrated his 80th birthday earlier in the year.

Sunderland Ladies’ Probus Club will hold its autumn fair on Thursday in St John’s Methodist Church, Ashbrooke, from 10am.

A Macmillan Coffee Morning will be held at David Vaughan’s Dental Surgery on Friday at 10am. Coffee and cake are on the menu to help raise funds.

Sunderland Minster Craft and Vintage Fair takes place on Saturday, October 3, from 10am to 3pm. Admission is 50p, children free. Refreshments will be available. There will be local crafts, handmade gifts and greetings cards and gift bags, vintage and retro goods, and lots more. Tables cost £10.

Ewesley Road Methodist Church is holding a jumble sale on Saturday, October 3, at 1.30pm. Admission is 30p.

Lots of past and present day features of Sunderland’s Tunstal Hills will be highlighted by officials of The Hills Protection Group at a meeting of Sunderland Men’s Probus Club tomorrow in Ashbrooke Sports 10.30am. New members are always very welcome.

Who Killed Dracula’s Bride – Halloween Murder Mystery Night at The Chesters Pub on Saturday, October 31, at 7pm. Put your sleuth skills to the test, have fun and help out a good cause. As part of a series of Organ Recitals at Sunderland Minster, Laurence Caldecote from St Nicholas, Nuneaton, will be appearing on Saturday, October 17, at 1pm. Entry is free.

Ewesley Road Methodist Church will hold its Messy Church on Saturday between 10am and noon. There will be fruit kebabs, fruit printing, colouring activities, decorating leaves craft ideas and the making of cone bird feeders. Praise 4 All will be held on the last Sunday of the month at St Nicholas Church, starting this week. This new service aims to provide a space to spend time in God’s presence through songs, hymns, prayer, ministry and testimonies. Everyone is welcome from the very youngest to the young at heart.

Outlook, a relaxed midweek service will held at St Garbriel’s Church on Monday, September 28. It usually meets on the second and fourth Monday of the month from 2pm to 3pm. This is a short, informal service followed by refreshments and a chat.

Sunderland and Tyneside Federation of Brotherhoods and Sisterhoods’ 140th Anniversary Festival of Praise Weekend with a Rally takes place on Saturday in Ewesley Road Methodist Church at 2.30pm. It will be followed by a Festival of Praise Service at 2.30pm on Sunday in the churc h. The speaker at this service will be The National President, Judith Howarth (Sunderland). Musical items from Graham Patterson and daughter, Amy. Everyone is welcome.

On Thursday a harvest supper will be held in St Mary Magdalene’s Parish Centre.
