A BAFTA-nominated film director will give Wearside cinema-goers an insight into shooting her debut movie.

To celebrate the release of I Am Nasrine, Empire Cinema in Sunniside will be hosting an exclusive question-and-answer session with writer and director Tina Gharavi.

Those attending the event, which takes place on Monday from 7.30pm, will be able to put their questions to Tina who recently received her first Bafta nomination for British Debut for the release.

Tina, who lives in South Tyneside, spent five years working on I Am Nasrine in her birth country of Iran.

The film tells the story of a 16-year-old middle-class girl from Tehran who is sexually assaulted by police after they detain her for riding on the back of her boyfriend’s motorbike.

After fleeing Iran for the UK, Nasrine and her brother end up living on a council estate in Newcastle, scenes of which were shot in South Tyneside.

“There is a lot of prejudice surrounding asylum seekers, and I think what some people don’t realise is that they don’t want to be here. None of them actually want to leave their countries,” said Tina.

“It’s a scary thing to leave behind your family and everyone you know to go somewhere where you don’t speak the language and don’t know anything about the culture.

“There are lots of circumstance that lead to people having to come here from other countries.”

She added: “Our goal with I Am Nasrine is to show how and why young refugees and asylum seekers end up living in places like Tyneside and to highlight the challenges they face in growing up in a new and very different country.”

John Hodgson, general manager for Empire Cinemas Sunderland, said: “We’re delighted to be able to host this special evening with local director Tina Gharavi for the opening of I Am Nasrine.

“Tina will have just attended the Bafta awards the night before, so she could be joining us as an award winner which would make the night all the more exciting. Here at Empire Cinemas Sunderland we’re committed to supporting local film makers and independent film. We hope I Am Nasrine goes on to be a great success.”
