AN artist donated one of her paintings to a leisure centre that has reopened under community ownership.
Denise Straughair’s depiction of St Mary’s Church, in Sherburn Village, will hang in the foyer of the village’s leisure centre in Kidd Avenue.
The centre was due to close due to council budget cuts, but is now being run by volunteers.
“It is quite difficult to find space to hold an art exhibition,” said Denise. “The leisure centre is ideal now that it’s been refurbished and I am looking forward to displaying more of my work in the village where I live.”
Coun Carol Woods, who represents Sherburn on Durham County Council, is one of the leaders of the project to bring the leisure centre back into use.
“It is great Denise has decided to donate a picture to us,” said Coun Woods. “It will have pride of place in the foyer.
“As well as sports facilities, the centre has a cafe, meeting rooms and other spaces which can be used by the community.
“It is great we can provide somewhere for artists to display and sell their work.”
The centre is open evenings and weekends and at other times by arrangement.
Anyone wanting to use its facilities should visit the centre or contact Coun Woods, tel: 07740 928802.
