YOBS have set fire to a DIY store compound containing thousands of pounds worth of flammable goods.
The blaze happened in the back yard of Wickes, off Wessington Way, Castletown.
Fire crews were called at 1.15am and were able to prevent the fire spreading to the combustibles inside.
It took 32 firefighters three hours to tackle the blaze and make sure the site was safe.
Steve Burdis, watch manager at Washington Fire Station, said: “The fire started in the back yard where there was a pile of stacked timber. It developed very quickly and damaged the rear of the store.
“We had to keep an eye on what was inside because there was a lot of flammable materials. It could have been a lot worse.”
The main body of the store was smoke damaged and a neighbouring property was also damaged.
