DETECTIVES are investigating a suspected arson attack which severely damaged a house.
The suspected arsonists targeted a property at Noble Terrace, in Hendon, just after midnight on Sunday.
Firefighters attended the blaze and spent several hours tackling the fire.
The house was empty at the time and no one was injured.
Police said the fire caused substantial damage to the property.
The houses on either side were also damaged by the blaze, causing damage to the roofing.
Detectives have launched an investigation into the blaze and are treating it as arson.
The area around the house was cordoned off until about noon on Sunday and officers remained on site.
A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “The fire happened just after midnight on Sunday, when police were informed by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service of a fire at an address in Noble Terrace, Hendon.
“It has caused substantial damage to the property, which was empty at the time.
“Police are treating the fire as arson, and are carrying out enquiries in order to establish how it started.”
