A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD girl remains in a serious condition in hospital today after she was knocked over.

Police have arrested and questioned a 57-year-old woman in relation to the incident in Oxclose, Washington, at 6pm yesterday.

The youngster was left fighting for life after she was hit by a Renault Megane at the junction of Castle Road and Warkworth Close.

The driver of the car was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop at an accident.

She has since been released on police bail.

Castle Road was closed for more than two hours while police investigators tried to piece together what happened in the moments leading up to the collision.

One driver said: “There were several police cars at the scene.

“There were police vehicles blocking off both ends of Castle Road. The road was shut for quite a while.

“A policeman was standing on duty asking drivers to turn back and suggesting an alternative route to wherever they were going.”
