An Army reservist has been honoured for his dedication to recruitment with a special award.

Lance Corporal Shaun Palmer, from Boldon Colliery, was presented with the Lord Lieutenant’s Certificate for Meritorious Service during a prestigious ceremony held in Sunderland.

The 25-year-old, who joined 251 medical squadron seven years ago, was handed the award by Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear Susan Winfield OBE for his achievements in the squadron recruitment cell after spending his spare time recruiting for the Army Reserves.

Since joining the army he has served in Afghanistan, provided medical cover on the Nijmegen Memorial Marches in the Netherlands and took part in exercises in Kenya and Cyprus.

Shaun, an electrical engineer, said: “I was very happy to receive this award. It’s certainly not something I was expecting, nor is it the reason for doing this job, but being recognised at this level is something I will be proud of for a long time.”

Around 176 service personnel and their guests attended the Lord Lieutenant’s Ceremony, run by the Reserve Forces and Cadets Association, to highlight the work of reservists and cadets from the Tyne and Wear area in the past year.
