Arctic Monkeys' former bass player's band hitting Sunderland
A new project from two top musicians has hit the music scene. MARISSA CARRUTHERS caught up with former Arctic Monkey Andy Nicholson and Milburn's Joe Carnall to find out more.
What do you get when you team up two top musicians?
This might sound like a joke, but Joe Carnall and the Book Club is no laughing matter.
In fact, it's the brainchild of two of Sheffield's brightest talents, who decided to join forces to present a new wave of music.
The band came about after Milburn frontman Joe Carnall left the Sheffield-based band last year to start his studies at the University of Sheffield.
Reluctant to leave behind the thrill of live music, Joe decided to set out on a new project by forming an indie rock band to run alongside his studies.
After inviting pal and former Arctic Monkeys' bassist Andy Nicholson, as well as Sheffield-based musicians Pat Conwill and Anthony Allen, Joe Carnall and the Book Club was born.
Now, after writing and rehearsing new tracks, the band hits the road this month to drum up a fanbase.
And tonight their tour brings them to Sunderland, where they will be stopping off as part of their mini-tour of the North.
Frontman Joe said: "We're totally ready to be playing out. With some great songs under our belt and a really fresh outlook on this new project, we're just itching to get out there. There's nothing wrong with looking back – it's a lovely rose-tinted wonderland in hindsight.
"But the future looks like having a positively rosy hue too."
And the boys are hoping this is just the start of things to come as they test the water before moving onto bigger projects.
"This is just the first chapter of our venture. We'll see how it goes and will hopefully be adding more dates in the future," Joe added.
Joe Carnall and the Book Club will be making their North East debut tonight at the Crash Club, Independent.
Crash course will be hitting Sunderland.
Tickets are 3 in advance from.seetickets.co.uk
If you miss them this time, the band will be returning to the North East to play World Headquarters in Newcastle on November 7.
