A DEDICATED volunteer with an animal charity is in the running for a top award.

Tony Phillips, from Peterlee, is up against two other hopefuls in the coveted “retail volunteer of the year” category of the PDSA’s annual Volunteer Awards.

The 57-year-old, a van assistant with the charity, was singled out for his “outstanding contribution and commitment”.

Tony volunteers four days a week and can often be spotted in the town helping to collect donations from supporters’ homes.

“I’m very humbled to have been nominated, let alone shortlisted for this award,” said Tony.

“Volunteering for PDSA has been more fun and diverse than I ever imagined, and it’s great to be making a difference in the local community so pets can get the veterinary care they need.”

Susan Curry, Peterlee PDSA shop manager, said: “Tony always has a smile on his face when he comes into the store.

“He brightens up everyone’s day before heading out in the van.

“Tony’s commitment to PDSA means we’re able to collect vital donations from our supporters that help raise funds for PDSA’s vets and nurses to care for some of the most vulnerable pets in the local area.

“Recently, Tony helped out on one of his days off to join three other volunteers collecting over 500 bags of clothing at the Great North Run, which will raise thousands of pounds for PDSA when sold.

“He is a real asset to the charity and deserves to be recognised.”

The PDSA, which provides free veterinary treatment to the sick and injured pets of people in need, has more than 4,500 volunteers helping in its charity shops, Pet Hospitals and fundraising groups across the country.

Together, volunteers help save PDSA £12.2 million per year.

The PDSA Volunteer Awards are now in their 12th year and are supported by The National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) and Pets at Home.

The shortlisted volunteers will be judged on their commitment to PDSA and enthusiasm for their roles. The winners will be announced later this year.
