A TRIPLE killer’s mum has said her son would have handed back his prison payout if he had been given an apology.

Kevan Thakrar, 26, was awarded £800 because some of his belongings were damaged or lost while he was being transferred after he attacked prison guards at HMP Frankland, Durham.

Meanwhile, his victims, including Craig Wylde, who has now moved from Seaham to Durham, are still waiting for their payouts four years on.

Thakrar’s mother Jean said: “It is clear from the judge’s view that the ombudsman did not handle the case fairly.

“Along with a £10 payout, the ombudsman ordered an apology, but this was still not forthcoming.

“Money shouldn’t have to be spent on a prisoner going to the court, but it was necessary because the complaints system didn’t work.”

Thakrar admitted attacking the guards, but a court cleared him of two counts of attempted murder and three of wounding with intent after he claimed he had been acting in self-defence.
