TONIGHT’S launch of this year’s Sunderland International Airshow has got off to a foggy start with all flying cancelled for safety reasons.
The Red Arrows, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Typhoon, Tutor, Tucano and Twister Duo Display Team will no longer take to the skies this evening.
Sunderland City Council said that low clouds at 150ft are too low for the displays to take place safely, hence the cancellation.
However, everything else will be taking place as planned, including, music, exhibits, the military groundshow, finishing with the advertised fireworks finale.
A council spokeswoman said: “The bands and ground activities are continuing, but tonight’s flying display at the Sunderland International Airshow has been cancelled.
“This is because there is a bank of low cloud offshore. This is giving poor visibility not only for flyers but for the crowd to see anything.
“There will still be a fireworks display to end the evening. We are watching the forecast for tomorrow.”
