YOUNGSTERS have been stepping out to take part in National Walk to School week.
Children from New Penshaw Primary School have been putting their best feet forward to support the nationwide event.

To make sure the youngsters are fully prepared for walking to school, members of Sunderland's Food in Schools team went along to give them some tips.

The team wanted to make sure pupils were aware of the road safety rules on their journeys to and from school.

As part of attaining National Healthy Schools Status, New Penshaw Primary School is working closely with Sunderland's Food in Schools team.

Sarah Davison, a Year 1 teacher at the school, said: "We want to encourage more pupils to walk to school and to understand the environmental and health benefits of doing so.

"The children received a certificate from the Food in Schools team at the end of the training and can't stop talking about how much they've learned.

"It was a great way to get the children involved in our Healthy School campaign."

THE Echo is teaming up with the Sunderland Healthy Schools Programme and Brasher, a Wearside company which makes Gore-Tex walking boots.
Look out for the competition after half-term where schools will have the chance to win five pairs of kids' boots worth £45 each.
