Woman, 81, dies after car hits her

A pensioner has died after being hit by a car outside a supermarket.
The 81-year-old woman, who has not yet been named by police, was hit by a silver Vauxhall Astra near Morrisons, in Whitburn Road, Seaburn at about 10.30am yesterday.

Three trained first aiders from the supermarket helped her, and she was stil conscious, but bleeding from her hands and legs, when an ambulance crew and rapid response car arrived.

She was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital with serious head injuries, and with both legs broken, but died early yesterday afternoon.

Paramedics congratulated Morrisons' staff for their speedy response to the accident.
