Clare Metcalf claims to be a real-life Doctor Dolittle.
The Philadelphia homeopath and "animal communicator" says she can find out everything from an animal just by looking into their eyes.
She says she can connect to an animal's brainwaves which send her messages in words, images and sensations.
Clare works with Sunderland cat rescue charity Feline Friends, talking to the cats to find out their background and to see if anything is wrong with them.
One of her most recent cases was a blind cat the charity named Samson, who was found wandering about on Grindon Lane.
Feline Friends are trying to trace the owners of the mature black cat, who they believe are from the Grindon area.
Clare said: "I connected with Samson through a picture of him. This is perfectly possible, as long as you can see the eyes.
"He told me he was hit by a car which had hit his head, and he now suffers headaches.
"He's blind from the accident, and because of this he could not find his way back to his home. He's really missing his owners, so we really hope they can come forward.
"I am one of these people who right from childhood had animals drawn to me and I was drawn to them.
"I only ever had a cat but I spent a lot of time with other people's animals, and used to visit the farm and the horses, and I was always talking to them.
"As I got older I kind of grew out of it because you find it a bit embarrassing."
But Clare's love of animals continued and she decided to study animal communication with world-renowned animal communicator Amelia Kinkade.
Right away she discovered she had a knack for it, and has now helped hundreds of animals who have been lost, depressed, or who were suffering from ailments, which she has also cured using her knowledge of homeopathy.
She said: "Amelia retrains your brain so you can actually pick up what the animals are saying like you could as a child, which adults say is just imagination.
"You retrain your brainwaves to get them on the same level as an animal. When you can do that you can start to pick up messages."
The messages you pick up depend on which side of your brain is most active, but can be transmitted in the form of words, images and sensations.
Clare, a human homeopath of 12 years, who is studying veterinary homeopathy, can pick up messages at all three levels.
"It can be very emotional especially with rescued animals," she said.
