Firefighters have issued a stark warning to youngsters starting dangerous bonfires.

Crews from Washington fire station were called to six illegal fires in 24 hours at the weekend.

Parents have been asked to make sure they know where their children are, as fire chiefs say youngsters are setting the blazes in the Glendale and Usworth areas of Washington.

Washington fire station watch manager Les Tough said: "The only bonfires we won't extinguish are the official ones on November 5th.

"These illegal fires are dangerous and can easily get out of control, with potentially fatal consequences."

People have been urged to only attend organised displays, as the bonfire season approaches.
