Caring teenager Nathan Brown is on a mission to spread the word about the devastating effects of the muscle-wasting disease Multiple Sclerosis.
Since his dad Carl was diagnosed with MS, which affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal chord, four years ago, Nathan does all he can to help his dad while also actively raising awareness and vital funds for the MS Society.
Not only has the 14-year-old been instrumental in setting up a Sunderland-centric MS website, he also helps his dad with fund-raising, attends society meetings and rallies friends and family to take part in the Boxing Day Dip.
Proud dad Carl, 40, of Hetton, who is fund-raising co-ordinator of the Sunderland and Washington branch of the MS Society, said: "Like a lot of young people Carl wasn't really aware of MS until I was diagnosed.
"Out of the 10 most common problems associated with MS, I have about nine of them, such as double vision, tiredness, weakness down one side and needing to use a wheelchair or scooter."
Carl, who is married to Helen, 38, added: "Nathan has been brilliant. He helps me with my scooter and when I do fund-raising.
"He also built a website for our branch to make people aware of events, news and meetings."
In recognition of the Hetton Comprehensive pupil's dedication, his grandma Gillian Brown has nominated him in our Christmas Wish appeal.
We launched our annual appeal earlier this month in a bid to find a special young person this festive season.
Gillian said: "Everyone says he is a ray of sunshine to MS sufferers. Not many 14-year-old boys would dedicate their time like this. He is a shining star and deserves to be rewarded."
The winner of the Christmas Wish Appeal will walk away with £200-worth of shopping vouchers from Debenhams.
There's still time for you to nominate a worthy young person. Perhaps they have overcome illness, helped care for a loved one or had a particularly difficult year for whatever reason.
Anyone aged 18 or over can be nominated for the competition, but they must live in the Sunderland or East Durham area.
You can email or write to us letting us know why your nomination deserves the prize. Please include a mobile/daytime telephone number in all entries. Closing date for entries is Friday, December 18.
Email your entries to craig.thompson@northeast-press.co.uk or write to Craig Thompson, Echo House, Pennywell, Sunderland, SR4 9ER.
