Colin Todd was so good an apprentice, his trainers just had to take him on.
The 38-year-old from Hendon initially took a low-paid post as an assistant storeman after losing his factory job.
But, keen to use his interest in woodworking and joinery, he enrolled on a series of Learning and Skills Council (LSC) North East-funded courses with Etec Ltd in Sunderland.
Now he is celebrating after scooping a regional award for his work and something even more valuable – a new job.
His proactive approach not only secured him a string of work-related qualifications, he was also offered a job at Etec.
As well as achieving National Vocational Qualifications at levels 1 and 2 in wood occupations, Colin took the opportunity to brush up his English and maths skills by completing qualifications in literacy and numeracy.
"I would certainly recommend vocational courses to other people, whether you are looking for a new career or just want to take your skills and experience to a higher level," he said.
"In particular, the NVQ Level 2 wood occupations has helped me to carry out Etec's construction projects to a high standard and work closely with my colleagues without having to ask for too much help and guidance."
Colin is now working towards a teaching certificate with the help of an evening course at City of Sunderland College.
He was recently named winner of the LSC North East's Celebration of Learning and Skills (CoLaS) 2009 Adult Learner of the Year award.
Colin's manager at Etec, Neil Gibbon, nominated him for the award.
"Colin is a very inspirational figure and affects everyone he meets with his cheerful disposition," he said.
"He has completely turned his life around after being made redundant.
"Everyone at Etec is very proud of Colin's achievements and we are delighted he has joined our organisation.
His enthusiasm rubs off on his team and there is little need for extra motivation to get the job done."
Dorothy Smith, LSC North East interim regional director, said: "Colin has proved that learning is enjoyable and can open doors to new opportunities."
