SUNDERLAND South MP Chris Mullin will stand down at the next General Election, it has been announced.
Mr Mullin has represented the constituency since 1987.

"After careful thought, I have reluctantly concluded that my useful life in parliament is over," he said.

"I will not, therefore, be a candidate at the next election."

The 60-yar-old dad-of-two, who is married and lives in Ashbrooke, has been a Minister in three departments - Environment, Overseas Development and the Foreign Office.

He was also chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee for four years.
