Sunderland MP Chris Mullin will head a Parliamentary "sleaze" watchdog running a probe into his predecessor who resigned amid the ongoing Westminster expenses row.
Mr Mullin temporarily replaced David Curry when he stood down as chairman of the Commons Standards and Privacy Committee.

The red-faced MP for Skipton and Ripon resigned last week after allegations he claimed nearly £30,000 for his constituency home despite being banned from using it by his wife following an affair.

He argued his expenses claims were modest, but referred the case to Parliamentary commissioner for standards, John Lyon.

Yesterday, in a statement, the committee described the allegation as potentially serious, but said it was a matter for the audit of claims being carried out by Sir Thomas Clegg.
