WEARSIDERS woke up to a dusting of snow this morning as winter finally arrived.
Temperatures were expected to reach a maximum of two degrees in the city today as Britain is hit with an icy blast from the Arctic.
The Met Office has said conditions could deteriorate further tonight as a mass of sub-zero air from the north meets warmer rain from the west.
Tonight the temperature could drop to minus one with Peterlee and Durham expected to be the coldest areas.
However, it could warm up tomorrow, when temperatures are likely to hit about five degrees.
The AA has advised motorists to only drive as fast as conditions allow when areas are hit by poor weather and to be aware of the greater stopping distances required in ice and snow.
It said it is deploying snow-busting patrol vehicles to help rescue stranded drivers.
Earlier this month the Highways Agency based on the outskirts of Durham, launched their winter campaign to raise drivers' awareness.
They urged motorists to make sure they and their vehicles should be prepared to take to the roads during bad weather and ensure they are safe and comfortable if they break down.
A fleet of 20 vehicles and 50-plus staff will be patrolling the roads, with 12,000 tonnes of grit to be stocked at all times to cover the major routes.
