Showers at a Wearside police station remained closed last night after bacteria which cause Legionnaires' disease were found.
Gill Bridge police station is one of five police stations in the North East where small amounts of legionella were discovered.

One officer was treated for a chest infection, and precautionary tests for the disease have been made.

Further tests were being carried out yesterday.

A Northuhmbria Police spokesman said: "In the majority of cases the shower facilities were closed to allow for full sterilisation, retested, found to be clear and reopened.

"In Gill Bridge Avenue the showers tested positive twice, so that is why they remained closed.

"However, we now believe we have found the source of the bacteria and are taking full remedial action."
