Boxing hero Tony Jeffries was dealt a knockout blow when he was advised to ditch his Mackem roots.
Now the Olympics star needs your help to decide whether to tone down his ties to the city.

Tony flew the flag for Sunderland when he brought an Olympic boxing medal home to Wearside.

But former super-middleweight world champion, Steve Collins, has advised the "Mighty Mackem" to play down his red and white roots so as not to alienate other North East fans.

The comments have sparked a huge Internet debate with scores coming forward to support Tony, whose high-profile appearances have helped put
Sunderland on the sporting map.

Tony, who has asked fans to help him decide if he should tone down his red and white image, said: "The reason people are telling me to change my SAFC ways is because they see me only marketing myself in Sunderland which I love doing.

"Loads of different people are telling me I should stop doing those things, and stop always mentioning Sunderland in interviews too.

"The reason they say that is because I'm ignoring other areas in the North East, like Newcastle, Durham and Middlesbrough, and their boxing fans."

Over the years, Tony has become a passionate ambassador for his home city, making appearances at events across Wearside, championing local charities such as the Grace House Appeal and wearing red and white shorts in the ring.

Fans on his Facebook website have spoken out to show their support for the boxing champion.

Another well-known Mackem Steve Turner, aka the Mackem Mover, wrote: "Every boxer has an identity so you would only have to think of something to replace it all with, and whatever you come up with, someone somewhere would have a problem with it, so stick to the real you.

"People love that more than a gimmick."

One fan, named Adam, wrote: "Look at Hatton and his support and he was always banging on about Manchester City. Came out to true blue music.

"After being at all your fights and seeing how it brought everyone together, even down Barnsley, I think you should just keep on doing what you're doing."

However, some supporters think losing the Mighty Mackem tag could work in Tony's favour.

Fan Andy said: "You are looking to get maximum exposure and generate as much interest as you possibly can. Just because you ditch a nickname doesn't mean you would forget your roots.

"It's time to harvest fans from a larger catchment area than just Sunderland and if that means not wearing red and white, so be it."

Would this be asked if a boxer was a geordie. I think not. They would be encouraged to shout about it and not hide it. Keep the name and be proud. if your good enough you will be a favorite of the whole nation never mind them up the road.

Sorry I think someone is missing the plot or is it me- always I read about "putting Sunderland on the map" The northesast fans who support TJ will continue to do so. The sporting dinner just held last week saw a section of the Sunderland suopporters heckling Aland Shearer and other Newcastle players who attended the dinner according to the press these Newcastle Players then left the dinner. The more this goes on the old Queen Vic rule will apply "Divide and Rule" which applies to the North East. All in the North East believe that this division EXISTS, because the press say so and then it is carried out. Rivalry by all means its good, but UNITED the North East will be stronger. Yes TJ should drop the strong "Mighty Mackem" tag. He can carry the flag for Sunderland like we all do who have left the town to live and work elsewhere, but still promote Sunderland at every opportunity. But we all know Sunderland is never listed on a map for the North East, it is never listed anywhere that is down to the City Council- we who have left the area still adore the place and as I say promote it all the time. Jeffrey's will do better fighting out of Manchester as long as he sticks to hard work and goes for what he wants he has to dedicate himself to climb to the top and not be distracted by any slight cause., same applies to Sunderland AFC and any other athlete that Sunderland produces. Those of us who have found new shore will tell you the rest of this country does not know that Sunderland exists like I say if i'm asked where Sunderkand is my stock reply is " a lille place behind the Bus station in Barnsley". Follow the Mighty Quinn who does carry the flag for Sunderland the rest is down to the CITY COUNCIL.

Collins should mind his own business and keep his big mouth shut. There are enough people in the region who try to ignore Sunderland, or put our fine city down at any opportunity.

I seem to recall Collins always wore green shorts when he was fighing. Why didn't he wear red occasionally so as to appeal to the Welsh. He was a good fighter Collins but his thinking has been numbed by too many bouts.

Keep up the good work Tony. Just keep winning son!

Do those two Reeves & Mortimer copycats PJ & Duncan aka Ant & Dec hide their colours? Did Tony Blair?

As a fellow exiled Wearsider i totally agree with the above comments! Whats it got to do with Steve Collins?Keep the red & white flag flying high Tony marra! Your city is proud of you & if you keep winning so will the whole nation!

I think Tony should keep his Sunderland Colours- they're fab. No one really seems to care where you come from anyway (not at any boxing match I've been too); as long as you're talented can put the punch where the mouth is, does it really matter? Just keep the red and white going Tony; you do more for Sunderland than our council. For that, you and Mr Quinn should be made Mayor
