Shoe fitter dies in Oz

Older Echo readers may well once have been fitted out with shoes by Preston Carr, who has died in Australia just short of his 100th birthday.

Mr Carr was featured in the Echo in August 1973 when he retired as group buyer for Binns store, of Sunderland, after a lifetime surrounded by shoes.

His 50 years' experience from van boy to footwear buyer for the company's 10 stores between Edinburgh and Grimsby, led him to say that he could tell a lot about a person from the type of shoes they wore.

Mr Carr and his wife Hilda, of Wenham Square, Ashbrooke, emigrated to Australia in 1986 to join their daughter Annabelle.
