A global phenomenon could be on its way to the North East as plans for a fantasy theme park are revealed.

If given the go-ahead, Orcestrator, planned for the outskirts of Durham City, will boost the region's economy by millions of pounds and create 220 jobs.

As part of the planned park, visitors will be able to create their own mythical world to live in for up to a week.

They will also be able to create their own mythical character and adventure with sieges, feasts and battles all on the bill.

Bruce Murray, the mastermind behind the scheme, said: "There's nothing quite like this anywhere in the world."

Adrenaline junkies will be expected to get into character in the mythical Dark Age world.

They will be sleeping in Viking long houses or thatched-roof huts, and feasting and drinking mead.

Employees will be dressed up as characters and will lead visitors through the imaginary world, which will be split into themes of fire, water, earth and wind.

Visitors can also tailor-make their own characters, which can be used again if they return to the park.

Mr Murray said: "It's about having an exceptionally interesting, challenging, rewarding time – in beautiful countryside.

"This is a unique opportunity for Durham to have a world-class tourism attraction which is low-impact, environmentally sensitive, encourages biodiversity and international visitors.

"It fits perfectly with Durham's bid to be City of Culture.

"It is about getting back to the simple pleasures and discovering something about yourself – interacting with people, getting away from the computer screen.

"It's going to be a totally fantastic journey. It's pure escapism, a bit like being in a living story."

Orcestrator would cover 250 acres of land owned by East Durham College.

It is estimated that the theme park, which has been four years in the planning, will attract 63,000 visitors a year.

If given the nod, design and development is expected to take a year, with building taking a further 12 months.
