Stalwart Frank Wheetley, secretary of the South East Durham Sunderland Supporters Association, launched a four-letter tirade of insults during Sunderlands Premiership clash with Tottenham Hotspur at the Stadium of Light last October.
Fifty-year-old
grandfather Wheetley was singled out by a club steward, who had been planted in the West Stand after complaints of foul and racist abuse during other matches, although the club was not sure at the time who was responsible.
Sunderland magistrates heard that Wheetley had been heard shouting an anti-Semitic jibe during the match while singling Ginola out for particular abuse.
Wheetley, of Kendal Close, Peterlee, denied using racially aggravated words and behaviour.
He claimed he was a victim of a vendetta by the clubs safety officer, John Davidson, a former chief superindent with Northumbria Police.
Wheetley claimed that the incident blew up after he stepped in to defend another fan who was being ejected from the ground for a separate offence.
Tony Jackson, defending, said: "Mr Wheetley is not only a committed fan but has always tried to keep his fellow supporters right as to the clubs rules and regulations.
"He only wants to put into effect what the club and FA wants, and that includes the anti-racism campaign."
Wheetley, a self-employed electrical engineer, was fined £200 with £100 costs and banned from attending designated association football matches in England and Wales for one year.
After the case, Mr Davidson said: "Sunderland Football Club will not tolerate racism in any form.
"Cases such as this one demonstrate that the club will not hesitate to prosecute offenders. Its our belief that everyone should be able to attend football matches and enjoy the game in a safe and friendly environment."
