IT was all aboard for food when the big cook bus visited a city school.
The Focus on Food Cooking Bus rolled into Bishop Harland CE Primary School to give youngsters hands-on lessons in healthy eating.

And the tasty treat certainly went down well.

The bus parked up in the grounds of the Ramillies Road school in Sunderland with its team of expert food teachers.

Joanne Johnstone, Cooking Bus Programme Coordinator, said: "With increasing concern over rising childhood obesity, the Focus on Food Campaign is a vital ingredient in helping give children full control over their food lives. If they are taught how to cook delicious healthy food, then they have the tools for developing a healthier diet.

"Bishop Harland School has signed up to the Food For Life Partnership, which is working towards improving food culture in schools and communities."

The Food Cooking Bus, which is supported by the Food for Life Partnership, was a fun way for the children to gain practical experience in cooking.

Focus on Food gave the children the chance to make fresh, healthy food including courgette and sundried tomato muffins, chickpea salad, moroccan orange and beetroot salad and fresh fruit salad.

Joanne said the aim of Focus on Food is to encourage and support the school community to develop cooking activities while working towards the Food For Life Partnership Mark. It also helps to improve practical cooking skills using seasonal, local and organic produce.

During the bus visit training sessions were given to staff and members of the community before the children had a go at cooking.

There were also sessions for parents and sessions for members of the school's cookery club, which is a mix of parents and children.
