Paul Nicholson, helmsman onboard Sunderland RNLI Lifeboat, said: "We were asked to launch and proceed to the scene in case the man fell or jumped into the river while the emergency services were attempting to assist him to safety".

After about 20 minutes, police managed to persuade the man to climb down before he was taken into custody.
