Detectives investigating a vicious attack in a Sunderland park today renewed their appeal for witnesses.

Two people have been arrested after a man was left with a suspected fractured skull after the assault in Thompson Park, Southwick, on Wednesday at about 10.25pm.

He remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

A member of the public called police to report the fight involving a group of men.

Officers attended the scene and found a 34-year-old man with head injuries.

He was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital and later transferred to Newcastle General.

Detective have questioned a 36 and a 24-year-old man about the assault.

They have both been released on police bail while inquiries continue.

A police spokesman said: "We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident."
