A man died when he was struck by a coach while he was walking along a motorway early today.
The accident happened on the A194(M) near its junction with the A1(M) at Blackfell, Washington, at 2.30am.

Police said the 38-year-old died when he was hit by a 49-seater, single decker coach which was travelling north.

The A194(M) was closed as an investigation was launched and traffic was diverted via the A1(M).

The identity of the victim has not been revealed by police and it is not known why he was walking along the motorway.

The road was closed for more than five hours after the accident.

The road, which bypasses Washington to link the A1 with Tyneside, was due to re-open this morning.

Police appealed for anyone who may have seen the man before the collision to contact the motor patrols division on 03456 043 043.
