Two extra wind turbines will be added to Wearside's Nissan factory to help boost the plant's energy efficiency and cut costs.

Installation will start in December, with the turbines expected to be in place by January, making Nissan a saving of almost £1million a year.

The six turbines on site generate about five per cent of the plant's annual energy and it is hoped the extra two will boost that to six per cent.

In addition, carbon dioxide emissions will be cut by up to 4,000 tonnes per year at power plants supplying the factory with electricity.

Mike Parkin, Nissan engineer, said: "Our current turbines are performing well in terms of energy cost reduction, so it makes sense to increase the size of the farm."

The site is also home to a protected species of great crested newts. Before installation can start Nissan will relocate the newts to a temporary home on the site.
