Major roadworks at one of Wearside's busiest junctions led to a Ford Mondeo crashing into cones on the southbound sliproad from the A19 to the A690 at 4.45pm yesterday.

The man driving the car was unhurt and police reported there was no damage to roadworks.

The Highways Agency (HA) yesterday closed the sliproad, which provides access to Doxford International Business Park.

The 16,000 vehicles which use it every day must find an alternative routes during the 13-week road widening scheme.
