Manhunt after machete attack

Police are hunting a thug who attacked a man with a machete at the weekend.
The victim, a 20-year-old man, was attacked in Hetton Road, Houghton, at about 9.15pm on Friday.

A police spokeswoman said they were notified about the attack at 11.30pm on Friday and found the victim had suffered a "quite serious" head wound.

The injury had been caused by a machete-type weapon.

"He was treated at Sunderland Royal Hospital for an injury to his head and eye, but has since been released."

The identity of the victim, who is understood to live locally, has not been revealed by the police.

Police officers were waiting to interview the man to get more details about what happened.
