A man admitted stealing lead from a church roof which had only just been repaired at a cost of £102,500.
Lee Everist, 22, of Fern Crescent, Seaham, appeared at Durham Crown Court and admitted theft of a quantity of lead belonging to St John's Church, Seaham.
It was estimated about1,500kg of the metal was stolen, with a scrap value of around £20,000.
Everist pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing 130 metres of lead flashing valued at £4,523 belonging to Asha Investments Ltd, of Church Street, Seaham, and not guilty to stealing four metres of lead flashing from Murray Humphrey solicitors in Church Street, Seaham.
In the dock with Everist was 23-year-old Andrew Veitch, of Laura Street, Seaham.
He pleaded guilty to stealing the lead from Asha Investments Ltd, and not guilty to stealing the lead from Murray Humphrey.
Prosecutor Richard Cowen said the pleas would be accepted.
Everist was bailed on condition he observe a night-time curfew at his home address and does not contact Veitch.
Veitch was bailed on condition he does not contact Everist.
The case was adjourned for sentence in the week beginning October 20.
