The youngest section of the Girl Guide movement has celebrated its 21st birthday.

Dozens of youngsters from Sunderland Rainbow units held a special party, and blew out 21 candles on a cake, at St Gabriel's Church, off Chester Road.

One in seven of all six-year-old girls in Britain are part of a Rainbow unit.

UK Chief Guide Liz Burnley said: "Rainbows are going from strength to strength and we would like to welcome more adult volunteers so even more girls can benefit from being able to be a Rainbow."

She added: "When Rainbows started in 1987 we had no idea it would take off so well.

"There are now over 80,000 Rainbows throughout the UK, and we are helping them build their social skills and self-esteem to become tomorrow's confident young women."
