A manhunt has been called off after escaped killer Gary Gibbon handed himself into a Durham police station.
At Teesside Crown Court, in April 1985, Gary Robert Gibbon, 43, of Peterlee, was sentenced to life behind bars after being convicted of murder.

On Friday, after serving 25 years in prison, Gibbon absconded from HMP Sudbury, an open prison in Derbyshire.

Gibbon, who was living at Jude Place, Peterlee, was arrested in the summer of 1984, when he was 17, and charged with murdering Nathan Cook.

Mr Cook was attacked near his Thames Road home where he was stamped on and kicked, before being stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle.

Gibbon pleaded not guilty. and told officers he stumbled across Mr Cook's body.

He said bloodstains on his clothes and shoes were from a nosebleed.
Gibbon admitted fighting with Mr Cook, but argued he was killed by someone else.

The jury took an hour to return with a guilty verdict.
