A driver smashed into two cars after taking sleeping tablets.

Nathan Prior struck a Honda and a Citroen parked on Queen Alexandra Road.

He left the scene of both accidents on the morning of February 3 and police later visited his home at Wearhead Drive, Eden Vale.

Sunderland Magistrates' Court heard Prior, 26, was taken to a local police station where he gave a negative breath test for alcohol.

But a blood test showed trace of diazepam and temazepam.

Prior pleaded guilty to two offences of leaving the scene of an accident and one of driving while unfit through drugs.

Magistrates banned Prior from driving for 21 months and ordered he complete a 12-month community order, with a citizenship programme and pay £43 court costs.
