Diamond couple reveal secret to happy marriage
Sixty years together and still going strong – that's Tim and Elsie Graves, who have just celebrated their diamond wedding.
The couple met through a friend in Fawcett Street and tied the knot in Park Road Methodist Church in Sunderland on March 29, 1948.
Tim, 85, served as ground crew with the RAF during the war in India, Burma and Sumatra, and in civvy street worked for 34 years in the blacksmith's shop at the National Coal Board's Philadelphia workshops.
Elsie, 89, worked at Young's cake shop in Frederick Street and the couple, had one son, David, 56.
Tim is a member of Houghton Town Bowls' Club and the couple held a party at the club pavilion. The guests included Tim's sister Ellen, 75, who was a bridesmaid at their wedding and flew in from her present home near Buffalo in the USA.
And Tim's secret of a long, happy life together?
"We go hand in hand. There are good days and bad days."
